on any given waterway. The "Tailwater" is the water contained
in the Tailrace. The Buford Dam Tailwater of the great Chattahoochee River
flows from the Buford dam located in Buford, Georgia.
The Chattahoochee River originates in the foothills
of the Appalachian Mountains in Helen, Georgia and flows into Lake Lanier near Gainesville, Georgia.
The river travels over 600 miles to the Gulf of Mexico bringing it's influence
to rural, residential and urban areas. The river joins the Flint river in Florida and becomes
the Apalachicola River as it finishes it's journey to the Gulf. Recently
it has been in the heart of water usage controversy between Georgia, Alabama

Below Buford Dam, the river supports a stocked Rainbow and Brown Trout fishery with some natural reproduction. Water temperatures remain in the fifty degree range year around aa far south as Island Ford near Atlanta. The river is stocked seasonally with brown and rainbow trout. Brook trout are occasionally found in the river, holdovers from previous stocking programs. The Buford Hatchery supplies the fish for the river and various other rivers, streams and lakes in Georgia.
Access for fishing and other recreational sports is available at various points along the river below the Buford Dam. There are numerous sources for information available. The Tailwater Chapter of Trout Unlimited is proud to be associated with this great river and continues to work for its protection and survival.
