Our January 28th meeting will be held at the Dam Store (directions page 4) and will feature Russ Fraze speaking on Smith Creek.  The Smith Creek DH area can be a fickle stream.  Some trips provide a fish almost every cast while the next day may tax your skill and patience making you hope you don’t get skunked!   Russ will give us the how-to, nuts and bolts of this beautiful stream with a detailed power point presentation.  He has promised to share some of his wooly-boojum, Smith Creek magic he pulls out of his…..pocket.  The Smith Creek Magic Fly will definitely be discussed!

There will be no regular meeting for the chapter in February but we will be fishing on the Tuckaseegee River in Dillsburo, North Carolina for a Tailwater outing on Saturday February 8th (details on page 4).

March 25th has Henry Cowen talking on flyfishing Lake Lanier.  Fishing can be a major challenge on the lake and Henry will be providing valuable insight on the nuances of fishing Lake Lanier.  Henry is a longtime guide on the lake and on salt water and has appeared on many fishing shows.  This fall he’ll be back to talk about False Abacore on the East Coast!  We will be meeting again at the Dam Store.

April 22nd  will feature

Vic Aloisio back at the Buford Hatchery.  Vic and the Cold Front Fishing Crew have been doing some high level research in Yellowstone for several years. Vic will be giving us an overview of how to set up and plan the trip to Yellowstone and get in the best fishing and joy.

Meetings are the fourth Tuesday of each month and begin at 6:00 PM unless otherwise noted.

Tailwater, as always, will be providing the supper meals.  Soft drinks and dessert will be also be served. Dinner is $5.00 per person.

From The President by Vic Aloisio

I want to thank everyone that made it to the Tailwater December Christmas Party at the Buford Hatchery! I hope all of you that came enjoyed the dinner, prizes and fellowship.  A big thank you to everyone who helped to set up, cook and serve.  Dave, Russ, Bill Danny and Brian Holloway made it happen!  Another big thank you to those that donated their time and provided gifts for the raffle; Brian Smith, Vance Hendon, Russ Fraze, Chattahoochee River Outfitters (Brian Stout @ 770.402.7783). Patrick Mawhinney, Howard’s Hardware, Mack Martin, and Guy Firor (The Dam Store @ 770.932.2031).  Their time and donations helped to make our Christmas Party a success.

We are set for our February 8th and 9th fishing trip to the Tuckaseegee DH in North Carolina.  This will not be a camping trip for those of you who do not camp.  Some of us will be staying at local motels for the night.  See page 4 for details.

The March Youth Fly Tying Clinic will be held on March 15th at the Sandy Springs Christian Church.  This is a one day clinic for children ages 10 – 15

The third annual Youth Fly-Fishing Clinic will be May 10.  These events fill very fast so call soon if you are interested.   For more information contact Mack Martin with the Upper Chattahoochee TU at 770.889.5638.

Don’t forget the Rabun Rendezvous at the Dillard House in Dillard on January 25th and the Hoot On The Hooch, March 8 at the Sautee Nacoochee Community Center (contact Dave Burton 706.778.2731).

Looking forward to seeing you all on January 28th at The Dam Store!  Remember, “if you can’t be handsome at least be a trout fisherman.”  See you on the river.

November Tailwater Dh Fishing Trip by Keith Collins

The TU Tailwater Chapter met at 7.30 AM on Saturday  November 23rd at Cochran Shoals, Chattahoochee DH. The day was bright, and clear, and as cold as a frog on an ice bound pool, so we warmed ourselves with hot drinks and doughnuts in front of a propane heater before putting up rods, climbing into waders and venturing out into the frigid waters of the Hooch. There were 7 of us for coffee and doughnuts, Vic, Danny, Brian, Robert, Rick Rzemieniewski with his son Ricky and myself. Rick R and Ricky had a conflicting appointment, so they did not fish but their support at breakfast was most welcome. The cold weather did not put the fish off feeding, we all had an exciting morning catching fish, both rainbows and browns. My largest fish was an 18” brown, taken on a Claret Rudolph (this pattern will be featured in next month’s online news letter).  Other successful patterns included nymphs and the ubiquitous Woolly Booger.  All my fish were taken on a 13 ½ foot #7 Spey rod and a fast intermediate sinking line. Vic had the misfortune of following me down the river watching me catching fish, so mid-morning he had a go with the Spey rod and caught a brown trout almost immediately. Beth Tuttle joined us for a late start and we all stopped around noon and moved on to a favorite greasy spoon, the 3 Dollar Café, where we talked about the ones that didn’t get away and declared the day a success.

Semi-Annual Raffle Begins with a Thank You to Orvis!

Our 1st rod raffle for 2003 is beginning.  Orvis Norcross donated an 8 weight 9’ 4” Orvis Trident TL Tip Flex rod for this auction.  It is finished out with an Orvis Large Arbor Battenkill reel complete with Orvis Wonderline.  This combo is valued at over $700.00!

In lieu of banquets and other fundraisers we plan to run two raffles each year.  As for prizes, these raffles will include rods, reels, boats or other fishing related items.  The monies raised will fund our mail-outs and support our cooperative efforts with other chapters and our own projects. Tickets are $10.00 each.  We will be handing out tickets at our January meeting. If you need some additional tickets drop us an e-mail.   Be sure to sell raffle tickets.  For more info contact Tailwater123@yahoo.ie.  Matt Krigman was the December winner of the Dave Edens custom 4 piece Smoky Mountain series rod.

Fly Of The Quarter: Bead Head Prince with Variations

Hook:          Size 12-16 nymph hook

Head:           Gold Bead

Thread:        Black

Tail:             Brown Goose Biots

Body:          Peacock Herl

                                Hackle:      Brown Hackle

Tying Instructions:
Crimp down the barb of the hook and slide a brass bead onto the hook to the eye of the hook. Wrap the hook with thread and secure the bead. Tie in the brown goose biots split at a 45 degree angle, for the tail. Next tie in a length of fine copper wire.  Tie in three strands of peacock herl.  Move the thread up to the bead.  Wrap the peacock herl to the bead and secure with two wraps.  Wrap the wire to the bead and secure. Tie in the tip of a brown wet fly hackle and make one to two spirals of the hackle and secure. Tie in the two white goose biots split at a 45 degree angle, for the wing.  Whip finish.  Some great variations to try are the Tellico Prince, Royal Prince or the Glo Prince.  The variations consist of adding yellow, red or chartreuse floss to the middle of the hook.  After tying in the tail (omit the wire) tie in two strands of herl, wrap forward 1/3 of the way and secure.  Tie in a length of five strand floss in one of the colors and wrap the next third. Then tie in another two strands of herl and wrap to the bead. For the wings use two pieces of holobou such as Mirage to give the fly a flashback effect.  The variations (especially the Tellico yellow) is very effective in North Carolina rivers.

Delayed Harvest Fishing On The Tuckaseegee in North Carolina

In lieu of our February meeting Tailwater will on the Tuckaseegee River in the Dillsburo/Sylva area in North Carolina on Saturday February 8.  Some of us will be spending the night at one of the local motels and fishing again on Sunday before heading home.  A list of the motels and directions to the meeting place on Saturday morning can be found on the Tailwater website at www.georgia-outdoors.com/tailwatertu.  We’ll start fishing at 7:30 AM.  Float tubes or pontoon boats can be used on the Tuck but it is also wadeable.  If they are generating we can move to some other nearby streams or Cherokee or the Nantahala DH.  A North Carolina licwnse is required and can be obtained online at http://www.ncwildlife.org/pg01_License/pg1a.asp.  The yearly is the best deal.
